Our Children Understanding Mental Illness and Addiction (CUMIA) programme is designed to address the specific needs of children aged 6 to 12 years who have a family or whānau member with a mental illness or addiction.

The programme can be undertaken as a group exercise, or parts can be used with individuals through activity-based exercises to aid in the understanding of mental distress and addiction in a fun, appropriate, and safe and supportive way.

This programme provides participants with a safe space to learn and express their feelings and develop important emotional self-regulation strategies.

The programme is flexible as to its delivery meaning that scheduling is adapted to meet the needs of the children and can occur after school or during the school holidays so not to interfere with their learning.
